Winter Maternity and Newborn Session in The Upper Valley
I’m still dreaming about this snowy maternity session in Hanover, New Hampshire. An expecting couple along with their sweet Australian Shepherd, braved the snow to capture this season of their life against the wintry backdrop. A few weeks later, we met for a cozy, in-home newborn session to welcome their new baby.
I offer a bundled maternity and newborn package for a session each before and after your new baby arrives, marking an important transition in your life and family.
Variability of New England weather can add to the story of your photo session, sometimes creating a challenge, though, rain and snow can add an element of drama that can make the images more memorable. The weather may determine how we dress, how we pose and move, and even where the shoot can take place. I’m impressed each time I have a couple or a family who will venture into the elements with me, especially soon-to-be parents! This couple willingly trudged through ankle-deep snow at Foley Park in Hanover, which overlooks the Connecticut River. Nervous to keep them out in the cold for too long, we created a variety of special portraits in a short amount of time to keep everyone comfortable.
What to Wear for a Winter Maternity Session
They chose a great style for a winter weather photo session that allowed them to be warm and comfortable by dressing in layers, but also remove jackets for a few photos to show off her maternal shape. Their outfits matched both the season, the New England vibe, and provided enough contrast to stand out agains the white, snowy backdrop.
In-home Newborn Session
Regardless of the time of the year, I always suggest the newborn session be held inside the home. Beside convenience and comfort, the in-home newborn session tells the story of the intimate first days at home with a new baby at home. Soft window light, cozy neutrals, and lots of family connection are what make these sessions so sweet.
With no rush, and breaks for diaper changes and feedings, we created candid and traditional portraits to capture tiny details and in-between moments of the new family of three. From different perspectives of the newborn alone and cradled in the arms of his parents, I created a variety of photos of the three of them together and the small details of hands and toes.
For newborn session styling, my advice is to keep it simple and use swaddles and blankets with neutral tones. The gentle tones make the images feel natural, light-filled and warm. I follow baby-led posing, to capture the newborn in their already-adorable natural state.
It’s such an honor and I am grateful to capture these tender first moments!
